Happy Father’s Day!
We went to my parents’ house for the weekend and got to spend Father’s Day with most of the family. We cooked out Saturday and Sunday, and just hung out.
The first thing that people say when I say I have 5 sisters (and no brothers) is that they feel bad for my dad. Considering that my dad LOVES cars, it probably wasn’t ideal, but he never complained about it. We aren’t Catholic, so the reason there are 6 of us is likely that they were really trying for a boy. We were all very athletic and tom-boys, so he didn’t have it so bad.
He’s a pretty unique guy… At almost 73, he’s been retired for almost 20 years from General Motors, but started a Landscaping/Mowing company a year or two after he retired because he didn’t know what to do with himself. His hobbies are working on classic cars, going to car shows, going to high school sporting events (especially basketball), eating cheese, playing basketball at the park or the school with guys 20-50 years younger than him (which is pretty awesome), and hanging out at an autobody/tire shop in town. He’ll make friends with any animal, and even had a domestic raccoon and groundhog growing up. All of the pictures that we have of him from his childhood include at least 2 animals. To him, there’s no such thing as a mean or bad dog, and he’ll attempt to make friends with, or straighten out any dog that has such a reputation. All of his dogs have been able to be off-leash at their house without running away or going into the road (they have about 20 acres and live on a country road). Boof however, can’t be let off leash because when we tried it, she ran straight into the road and then around the entire property. We’ve joked about leaving her there for doggy bootcamp so she could eventually be left off leash, but we’re afraid that she’d be 50 lbs when we picked her up because dad’s dogs tend to be held together by cheese. It’s pretty much – a piece for him, a piece for the dog – multiple times a night. He may even be held together by cheese.
Regardless – he’s a great guy and a great dad – and he did a hell of a job raising us with our mom. He’ll never read this because he doesn’t know how to turn on a computer and I’m sure he has no idea what a blog is, but I love you Dad!
