Sunday Social: Kid to Adult
It’s Sunday Social day where Ashley and Neely post questions each week for people to answer on their blogs and a linkup. This week’s questions are a mix of random ones.
1. When you were little what did you want to be when you grew up?
I went through different stages. I remember claiming to want to be a brain surgeon (I think all kids say something crazy like that though), play in the NBA (not WNBA), own an ice cream shop, a truck driver, and cowboy. I was a tomboy, though I didn’t want to be a boy, despite that most of those choices were male-dominated careers, minus the ice cream shop owner. In 6th grade I read one of my sister’s old college psychology text books and knew I wanted to go into that field after that. And then I loved serial killers and wanted to be a criminal profiler in the FBI. I’m still kind of mad that I never had the balls to go for it. I also don’t know whether I’d be able to tolerate a crime scene. I’m fine with reading vivid descriptions, but I don’t love gore in movies, so I’m not sure if it’s one of those things you get used to or what.
2. What was your favorite way to kill time as a kid?
Riding bikes, driveway basketball, throwing the softball, playing barbies, board games (Christine always cheated at monopoly, and probably every game, but if we called her out, she just said – ok, I quit – and we wanted her to play, so we didn’t have a choice. Right, Christine?). I also really liked to read, so if no one was around to do those things with, I was probably reading a book or magazine.
3. When did you get your first cell phone?
It would have been around 1999-ish. I worked in a pager store (lol, remember those?) while I was in college. Cell phones weren’t something that everyone had at that point (at least where we lived), but they were becoming more popular. We started carrying pre-paid cell phones to sell, so my boss gave me one. I didn’t use it that much – minutes were expensive, so it was just good for quick calls or paging someone, lol. That boss was a total sketch. I think he just bought the store to use it as a front for something else (not sure what), but he lived 2 hours away and was usually only in the store when it closed. I had been running the store for a year or so already, so he didn’t really have to handle anything, nor did he know how. So when he told me he was going to take over and wouldn’t need me much, I stopped working there. I probably got my first real (non-prepaid) cell the next year or so after I left…maybe 2000 or 2001? I can’t remember if I had one while in was in college or not.
4. What is your favorite magazine to read?
Hmm…that’s hard! Probably People because it has a mix of celeb trash, but also real stories. I don’t buy it because it’s expensive. I do subscribe to US Weekly (it was a super cheap price), Self, Shape, various home and cooking magazines, etc. Most of the subscriptions were crazy cheap and I wouldn’t bother to renew all of them if I couldn’t get them for a couple bucks/year.
5. What is the one random object people would be surprised to find in your purse?
I literally don’t have anything very random in there. I carry the bare minimum in a purse. I guess it would be the mustache duct tape wallet that my nephew made me. I usually just keep small bills in there, but sometimes it’s just empty. Other than that, I have a shout wipe, nail file, mirror, 2 lip tints, probably a chapstick, 3 pony tail holders, my hard case wallet, gum, oil blotting papers, and a little card case with gift cards/rewards cards, etc. I’ve always wanted to get a big girl purse, but I never knew what I’d put in it. Now I’ll have a diaper bag instead with just a wristlet in it with “my” stuff probably. I used to only carry a wristlet, so that list above was cut in half for years.
