Workouts: August 29 – Sept 4

I had some rough workouts this week and by Thursday night I was feeling a little burned out.  Lo’s volleyball team could have used a sub and even on a bad night I would have been helpful in that league, but I didn’t think I could do it.  It ended up being a pretty low workout week, mostly because of the holiday weekend.  I don’t usually workout on the weekends and missed a couple of other normal workouts for various reasons.  Because of how the week fell, there won’t be a 100 Challenge Workout in this post, but that’s because I’m doing it tomorrow.  So I’m still doing it for the week….

Wednesday, August 29

  • Noon – Tabata Workout, 20 seconds on, 10 seconds off: 8 rounds:  Deadlifts with 15 lb kettle, spread cruch-ups (lay spread eagle and then crunch everything in), wall balls with 10 lb ball, exercise ball pikes.  4 rounds:  mountain climbers, exercise ball rollouts.  I have an app on my iphone called “seconds free” where I can program a tabata timer so I don’t have to watch the clock.  I ran for about 15 minutes afterwards – I don’t remember how far, but I don’t run fast and was sore, so probably only about a mile and a quarter.
  • 7:00 p.m. – 80 min. GoYoga Heated Flow:  We focused on some crazy arm balances again and did a lot of planks.
  • 8:30 p.m. – 20 min. run:  I pretty much hate running, but it was nice and cool out after yoga and I really wanted to run.  If I get the running spirit, I try to take advantage because it’s very rare and fleeting.  I could have kept going even, but it was pretty dark and I was nervous running in my vibrams on uneven sidewalks in the dark.  I could have switched to the road (our neighborhod isn’t busy), but I also didn’t want to overdo it because I’d already done a lot.  My running must have been inspired by my sister who started running a few months or so ago.  She’s doing awesome taking this time for herself considering she works and has 3 boys, 2 of which are teenagers and in sports.  She runs on a nice bike trail near their house and she posted on facebook the day before that she ran her first 10k.  The next day she did it two more days in a row and ran over 100 miles in August!

Thursday, August 30

  • Noon:  I was sore but I sucked it up and headed to spinning.  And of course, she wasn’t there so it was cancelled.  I really regretted not grabbing my headphones/iphone, but I grabbed a magazine and hopped on a spinning bike.  I was only going to do about 20 minutes and move onto something else, but I got into it and went for 45 minutes.  It was harder than regular class was – I did jumped and climbs and sprints based on when I’d start a new paragraph.
  • 5:30 p.m. – Capital Club Vinyasa Yoga:  In honor of the Blue Moon happening on Friday, we started our class normally and then did moon salutations for the second part of that class.  Moon salutations are the cooling counterbalance to sun salutations and honor the feminine side of energy, so it worked out well because no guys were in the class.  It was nice doing this variation.  I used to have a problem with “Slipping Rib Syndrome” when my rib was knocked out of place during a “riot” at the psych hospital that I worked at.  It wasn’t a serious issue, but occasionally one of the upper ribs in the middle of my chest would slip out of place in the back and cause a lot of pain where it connects to my sternum.  It happened every so often for a few years, but hasn’t happened for about 3 years, though occasionally it feels like it might.  Sometime during a twisting side plank it felt like it was going to slip out again, and I actually kind of wanted it to because it’s been getting close quite often lately and I feel like it’s going to happen sooner than later anyway.  It feels like when you have a joint that needs to pop or crack and can’t.  When it comes out, I have a few things I can do to try to force it back in, but it mostly has to happen on its own.  Anyway, the moon salutations must have been VERY cooling because my energy was so low when I got home that I couldn’t even consider playing with Lo’s volleyball team that night.  He thought they’d have 5, but ended up only having 4, so I felt bad.  I felt like a powered down robot though.

Friday, August 31

  • Noon – No workout:  I knew I shouldn’t do much because of the whole powered down robot thing.  Lo was going to pick me up early because he had to be towards downtown before 4 p.m. to pick up our rain barrel and he would have had to kill over an hour to pick me for happy hour and to see “Sleepwalk with Me”.  It’s a fantastic movie written, directed, and starred in by Mike Birbiglia, who is one of our favorite comedians.  We found him through NPR towards the beginning of our relationship and we were always quoting him for random things.  A lot of his standup scenarios were used in the movie, considering the movie was mostly about his coming up in the standup world, and it kind of took me back to when we were dating.  As for happy hour, we went to Tip Top first, but there isn’t much on the menu that I can have and nothing sounded particularly great, so after the Ohio Nachos and a beverage, we went to Dirty Franks Hot Dog Palace (both are part of Columbus Food League Family).  They offer gluten free buns and awesome dog toppings, plus great cocktails.  I had the Whoa Nellie, which is an all-beef dog with BBQ brisket on top on a GF bun.  My cocktail was the Dirtysicle – it was a fruity vodka drink with a popsicle stuck down in it.  Loved it!

Well, yeah…that’s about it, pathetically.  I don’t normally workout on Saturday or Sunday.  Monday was Labor Day and since I was off and most of the yoga classes were cancelled I didn’t have those to do.  Tuesday I had to flex out my lunch to leave early to get my hair done.  And that’s that.

I was going to do a yoga class on Tuesday and even signed up for it, but I’m having some shoulder pain and was worried about doing 2 hard 80 minutes yoga classes two days in a row.  It’s two part pain – I have a few horrible knots on my shoulder blade that are constantly pinching and shooting up into my neck, and I have a sharp pain in my rotator cuff when I twist my arm either direction.  It’s happened before and it kind of feels like something is catching, but it always goes away.  Lo tried to rub the knots from my shoulder blade and I rolled on a lacrosse ball, but they don’t feel any better and now they feel like a bruised apple probably feels.  Whenever I have pain from massage, especially if it’s very localized, it always makes me think of a bruised apple.  Don’t worry, Lo thought that was weird too.

I’m hoping to get back on track next week!
